"When it comes to the future of moving, we know exactly which way to go!"

Moving Plants
  • Some house plants are susceptible to shock when moved
  • Temperatures below 35 degrees or above 95 degrees for more than an hour can kill many plants
  • Most house plants can survive seven to ten (7 - 10) days without water but should be moist when placed inside moving cartons
  • House plants can tolerate darkness for up to a week - Gradually expose plants to sunlight after prolonged darkness to avoid wilting and sun scald
  • Most professional movers will accept plants, if not more than 150 miles or delivery within 24 hours
  • Check federal and state regulations for quarantines or other restrictions when moving across state lines
  • Several states require that plants be inspected and declared "pest free"
  • Some states have random vehicle checks - others inspect at their borders
  • You must arrange for inspection of your house plants by an authorized state department of agriculture inspector
  • Never carry plants in the car trunk - they will easily get too hot or too cold

MOVING SAFETY TIPS

Moving companies are not licensed to transport "hazardous materials"

  • Dispose of flammables such as fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, ammunition, etc.
  • Drain fuel from mowers and other machinery - discard partly used cans of oil, paint, thinner, or other substances that may leak.
  • Carefully tape and place inside individual waterproof bags any jars or cans of liquid that you plan to take with you.
  • Refillable tanks must be purged and sealed by a local propane gas dealer
  • Discard non-refillable tanks.
  • Have rugs and draperies cleaned - leave them wrapped.
  • Obtain a written appraisal for antiques to verify the value.
  • Avoid waxing or oiling wooden antiques and fine wood furniture prior to moving - some products may soften the wood making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.
  • Before dismantling your outside TV antenna, check to see if the cost of a new one is worth the hassle of moving the old one.
  • Third party services are generally required when moving items such as hot tubs, big screen televisions and some exercise equipment.
  • Talk to your mover about disconnection and reconnection of your washer, dryer, dishwasher, grandfather clock, pool table, satellite dish, etc.

ADDITIONAL COSTS AND CONCERNS

  • Arrange day care for small children on moving day.

  • Purchase a back brace if you plan to do a lot of the heavy lifting yourself.

  • Reserve hotel rooms for each night during your travel to your new destination.

  • If your moving yourself, purchase a lock and secure your belongings while you sleep, eat or away from your rental truck.

  • Plan to have small change on hand for tolls.
