- Use the floor plan of your new residence to decide what items you want to keep.
- Create an inventory of your household goods.
- Contact Future Moves of America to arrange for as many as three reputable moving estimates.
- Contact your homeowners/renters insurance company to ask a) if your household goods are covered while being transported, b) if the policy provides coverage against damages or loss and; c) is there a deductible?
- Create a file for moving receipts and moving documents
- Transfer your child’s school records.
- Call Future Moves of America to schedule your move with your preferred mover.
- Order a phone directory from your new town or city.
SIX WEEKS BEFORE MOVING
Send Change of Address Notices To:
FOUR WEEKS BEFORE MOVING 
- Begin packing
- Arrange cleaning and repairs for drapes, carpets, etc
- Begin to use up food items
- Create a file for important documents to take with you:
*Birth certificates
*CD’s
*Marriage license
* School records
*Medical and dental records
*Insurance and other valuables papers
THREE WEEKS BEFORE MOVING
Call to have utilities and phones disconnected & reconnected at your present and new residence:
- Phone company
- Cell phone service
- Water
- Electric
- Gas
- Cable/Satellit
- Waste management
- Call to have utilities and phones connected at your new residence for the day before delivery
- Call to transfer car and insurance registration
- Arrange for child care for packing and moving day
- Reserve elevators for pick up or delivery locations.
TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING
- Arrange for pets to be moved
- Verify that your mover will move plants
- Donate, give-away or dispose of hazardous items that your mover can not move
- Service your auto for the upcoming trip
ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING
- Cancel newspaper, lawn services, etc.
- Transfer bank and savings accounts
- Prepare two weeks of medication and have new prescriptions.
- Forwarded/change of address
- Prepare travel funds
- Arrange for payment of your move with your moving company
- Close safety deposits boxes
TWO DAYS BEFORE MOVING
- Clean out and defrost freezer and refrigerator
- Secure and store valuables to be carried with you in a safe place;
*Jewelry
*Important documents
*Money & Coin collections
MOVING DAY
- Remain at the residence until your movers have finished loading
- Accompany your driver while the inventory is being prepared
- Carefully review and read the Bill of Lading before you sign it
- Retain copies of your inventories and your Bill of Lading after signing them
- Keep all moving documents with you until your move is complete and all claims are paid
- Walk through your home with your driver to check for any items that may have been overlooked
- Provide directions to your new home and contact phone information to your driver
DELIVERY DAY 
- Remain at the residence until your movers have finished unloading
- Federal requirements mandate that you must pay for your move before unloading begins, unless other payment arrangements have been made
- Oversee the delivery and unpacking
- Check carefully for damage to furniture
- Check carefully for missing items
- Check carfully for any crushed boxes or containers
- Document any damaged, missing items or crushed boxes/containers on the inventories. Retain a copy for your records
- Call the moving company to file a claim
