EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

  1. Use the floor plan of your new residence to decide what items you want to keep.

  2. Create an inventory of your household goods.

  3. Obtain 2 – 3 moving estimates from reputable moving companies. Contact Future Moves of America, they can arrange for as many as three reputable bidders for your move.

  4. Contact your homeowners/renters insurance company to ask a) if your household goods are covered while being transported, b) if the policy provides coverage against damages or loss and; c) is there a deductible?

  5. Create a file for moving receipts and moving documents.

  6. Transfer your child’s school records.

  7. Call Future Moves of America to schedule your move with your preferred mover.

  8. Order a phone directory from your new town or city.

SIX WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

  1. Search for health-care professionals in your new area. Future Moves can help with this!

  2. Fill out USPS Change of Address Form - USPS Change Of Address Form

  3. File Change of Address Form 8822 with the IRS - IRS Form 8822

  4. Send change of address notices to:

    • Insurance companies (home/renters/car/life)
    • Credit card companies
    • Banks
    • Investment accounts
    • Dentists, doctors, medical professionals
    • Attorney/Accountant
    • Schools
    • Airline frequent flyer clubs
    • Magazine subscriptions
    • Friends & relatives
    • Auto insurance and State Motor Vehicle Bureau
  5. Register to vote in your new town or city - Register To Vote In Your New

  6. Compare banks in your new town or city

  7. Request pet records

  8. Have a garage sale/donate items

  9. Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles - Find Your DMV

  10. Notify the Social Security Administration - Social Security Change of Address Form

FOUR WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

  1. Begin packing.

  2. Arrange cleaning and repairs for drapes, carpets, etc.

  3. Begin to use up food items.

  4. Create a file for important documents to take with you:

    • Birth certificates
    • CD’s
    • Marriage license
  5. School records

  6. Medical and dental records

  7. Insurance and other valuables papers

THREE WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

  1. Call to have utilities and phones disconnected & reconnected at your present and new residence:
    • Phone company
    • Cell phone service
    • Water
    • Electric
    • Gas
    • Cable/Satellite
    • Waste management

  2. Call to have utilities and phones connected at your new residence for the day before delivery.
  3. Call to transfer car and insurance registration.
  4. Arrange for child care for packing and moving day.
  5. Reserve elevators for pick up or delivery locations.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE MOVING

 

  1. Arrange for pets to be moved.

  2. Verify that your mover will move plants.

  3. Donate, give-away or dispose of hazardous items that your mover can not move.

  4. Service your auto for the upcoming trip.

ONE WEEK BEFORE MOVING

 

  1. Transfer bank and savings accounts.

  2. Cancel newspaper, lawn services, etc.

  3. Prepare two weeks of medication and have new prescriptions forwarded/change of address.

  4. Prepare travel funds.

  5. Arrange for payment of your move with your moving company.

  6. Close safety deposits boxes.

TWO DAYS BEFORE MOVING

 

  1. Clean out and defrost freezer and refrigerator.

  2. Secure and store valuables to be carried with you in a safe place;

    • Jewelry
    • Important documents
    • Money
    • Coin collections, etc.

MOVING DAY

 

  1. Remain at the residence until your movers have finished loading.

  2. Accompany your driver while the inventory is being prepared.

  3. Carefully review and read the Bill of Lading before you sign it.

  4. Retain copies of your inventories and your Bill of Lading after signing them.

  5. Keep all moving documents with you until your move is complete and all claims are paid.

  6. Walk through your home with your driver to check for any items that may have been overlooked.

  7. Provide directions to your new home and contact phone information to your driver.

DELIVERY DAY

 

  1. Remain at the residence until your movers have finished unloading.

  2. Federal requirements mandate that you must pay for your move before unloading begins, unless other payment arrangements have been made.

  3. Oversee the delivery and unpacking.

  4. Check carefully for:

    • Damage to furniture
    • Missing items
    • Crushed or damaged boxes
  5. Note/document any findings for a, b, or c above on your inventory before signing – retain copies.
