"When it comes to the future of moving, we know
exactly which way to go!"
If
you’re planning to contact more than one moving company
for estimates, you may want to start by checking each moving
company’s service record and reliability first. The
Better Business Bureau
(BBB) is a good place to begin.
Now that you’re comfortable, call the mover(s) on your
list to request an estimate. If you’re moving out of state,
these are good questions to ask the movers that you are
considering:
- Do you offer free written estimates?
- Can you guarantee the estimate for my out of state move and put it in writing?
- If my actual weight and services are less than the estimate, will I be charged less?
- What kind of insurance do you offer? Is there a charge for valuation/insurance?
- Will you guarantee my pick up and delivery dates? If so, how much will you compensate me each day if my driver is late?
- Can you provide references?
If the mover has a good BBB rating and can answer “yes” to each of these questions, you should consider making an appointment to see their representative for a free estimate. Two or three estimates are considered a reliable number of moving companies to compare estimates. More than three estimates can become confusing.
Carefully compare each estimate. If the estimate is guaranteed, choosing your mover will be simple once you compare each estimate and determine the following:
-
What is the estimate weight of my shipment?
If the weight compares much higher or lower (more or
less than 10%), compare the Table of
Measurement/Cube Sheets and check for any
discrepancies that may include items that were
included or excluded that are to be moved
-
Did the mover provide me with a copy of the Table of Measurement or Cube Sheet?
This can be used to compare how each mover
determined their weight for your estimate and can be
used as a tool to check for any possible
discrepancies or for comparing with other estimates.
If your mover did not leave the Table of
Measurement/Cube Sheet, ask for a copy
-
Was the representative helpful and did they leave moving materials?
Most of these materials include helpful brochures
and moving materials, references, packing and moving
tips, history of the moving company and the Rights
and Responsibilities booklet
-
Which carrier offers the best price?
This is important, but consider all answers before
choosing your mover – choosing a mover based on
price only can be a huge mistake
-
Is the price “bound” or “guaranteed”, or is it just an estimate?
Your estimate should clearly state if the charges
are binding, guaranteed, guaranteed not-to-exceed or
estimated
-
Is the valuation/insurance premium included in the cost or will it added to the cost? Is there a deductible?
Most premiums for valuation or insurance vary
slightly in cost. Be careful that you’re not fooled
by a lower cost premium that has a high deductible
attached
-
Is any packing included in the estimate?
If you’re packing your own personal effects, most
movers will include the cost to pack and unpack your
mattresses and box springs – Most moving companies
will not move these items unless they are packed in
boxes or heavy plastic
-
What payment terms and options does your company offer?
If the mover requests a deposit, they should not be
considered – payment before unloading is standard
and is Federally mandated
-
Who do I contact if I encounter a problem during my move or if I need to file a claim? Dealing with different people and different office/agencies/affiliates when something goes wrong, if you have a question, or if you need to make a change can be frustrating and will send you and your move into a tailspin! If the mover you choose to work with is service oriented, they will ask you to call them for everything, not a different office, agent, affiliate or the van line.
